People come to you for advice

Finding our unique gifts and purposes can sometimes be a bit tricky since they’re often tucked away inside us, just waiting to be discovered! Whether you whip up delicious meals, lend a listening ear, or have a knack for organizing, consider why your friends and family reach out to you for help.

Also, just a reminder that this post is part of our free course on uncovering your purpose. It’s designed to help you discover your authentic gifts and express yourself fully.

What do people come to you for?

Have you ever thought about what draws people to you? Maybe they seek inspiration from you or turn to you for wise relationship advice—like you’re their go-to Hobby Counselor!

It could be that when someone moves into a new place, they look to you for a little help with interior design because they love your style. Or perhaps your cooking skills are so great that people always ask you for recipes and tips in the kitchen. You might just have that special touch that makes people feel seen when they share their life stories with you.

The happy woman helping another woman

Maybe you attract friends who feel a little lonely or need a listening ear when they face challenges because your wisdom shines through. Perhaps you’re like a warm hug for those around you, making them feel good and supported. People might admire how you guide them with your easy-to-understand explanations, just like a great teacher.

Take a moment to think about your friends, family, or even people you’ve just met. Reflect on your past relationships—what were the reasons they sought you out?

Using your talents in the wrong way can make you feel taken advantage of.

Here’s the thing: if we use our gifts with the wrong people or for the wrong reasons—out of guilt or fear, and without discernment—we’re likely to feel taken advantage of. For example, if we have a gift for giving and compassion, but we simply extend that kindness to everyone without thought, we might end up feeling used. We might find ourselves saying things like, ”People are just using me,” or ”They just want things from me.”

Be of service and participate in the divine act of co-creation; it is truly fulfilling.

However, it’s important to remember that we are all connected. We are constantly co-creating our experiences with the world around us. So, it’s not that people are using us, but rather that the universe—God, or whatever you believe in—is working through us. When we use our gifts for the right reasons, it feels fulfilling. We don’t feel exploited; instead, we feel joy in being of service and excitement about showing up for ourselves and others.

Helping others feel acknowledged is a precious gift the world needs.

Perhaps you have the ability to truly see others, and people come to you seeking that connection. In many parts of the world, people struggle with loneliness and pain, and simply acknowledging someone—saying, ”Hi, how was your day?”—can make a significant difference in their lives. If people frequently share their life stories with you and you wonder why it keeps happening, it’s because you genuinely see them and are compassionate. This is a gift, and it means you’re being of service.

Your gifts may not be your job

Your gifts may not necessarily be related to your job; they could simply be your way of living and being.

Sometimes, we do need to receive compensation for our time and energy, but often, it’s just part of who we are—it’s not merely a job; it’s our way of living. If we engage in this way for the right reasons, we won’t feel used or taken advantage of. However, we must learn to practice discernment in how we share our gifts.

Giving a hand, being a guide

Are you an exceptional mediator or guide?

Perhaps you’re a peacemaker or a mediator, and people often come to you to help resolve their conflicts. You may hear from others that you should pursue a career in this area—people telling you, ”You have such great cooking skills, you should really consider that,” or ”You’re an excellent teacher; you should teach this subject.” You might also receive compliments like, ”Your advice always helps me; you should guide others.”

Creating beauty, order, and harmony is a significant gift.

Creating beauty, order, and harmony is a significant gift.

Additionally, you might receive praise for your home and your talent for creating a harmonious environment, leading people to suggest you explore a career in interior design. Perhaps people admire your voice, your way of speaking, or your singing abilities. So, what do people seek your guidance for?

Woman using her voice

Do you use your talents to inspire and uplift others, or do you use them to bring people down?

For me, it’s important that people leave feeling encouraged and alive. It comes naturally to me to uplift others and use my words to bring light into their lives, which I consider a gift. I genuinely enjoy doing this, and it doesn’t drain my energy. However, I also have the free will to use my gift destructively, as many people do—by tearing others down and speaking negativity into their lives, making them feel inadequate. Many don’t realize how powerful their words and voices can be. I encourage you to use your gifts and talents in a way that uplifts both others and yourself.
